Magnetic-Shield Cracks Found; Big Solar Storms Expected

An unexpected, thick layer of solar particles inside Earth‘s magnetic field suggests there are huge breaches in our planet’s solar defenses, scientists said.

These breaches indicate that during the next period of high solar activity, due to start in 2012, Earth will experience some of the worst solar storms seen in decades.

Solar winds—charged particles from the sun—help create auroras, the brightly colored lights that sometimes appear above the Earth’s poles.

But the winds also trigger storms that can interfere with satellites’ power sources, endanger spacewalkers, and even knock out power grids on Earth.

“The sequence we’re expecting … is just right to put particles in and energize them to create the biggest geomagnetic storms, the brightest auroras, the biggest disturbances in Earth’s radiation belts," said David Sibeck, a space-weather expert at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

“So if all of this is true, it should be that we’re in for a tough time in the next 11 years."

Into the Breach

Data from NASA’s THEMIS satellite showed that a 4,000-mile-thick (6,437-kilometer-thick) layer of solar particles has gathered and is rapidly growing within the outermost part of the magnetosphere, a protective bubble created by Earth’s magnetic field.

Normally the magnetosphere blocks most of the solar wind, flowing outward from the sun at about a million miles (1.6 million kilometers) an hour.

“The solar wind is constantly changing, and the Earth’s magnetic field is buffeted like a wind sock in gale-force winds, fluttering back and forth in response to the solar wind," Sibeck said this week during a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

Earth’s magnetic field lines align themselves in different directions over various regions of the planet.

Near Earth’s Equator, where solar winds press against the magnetosphere, the field lines point north.

Solar winds also carry magnetic field lines toward Earth, and those solar field lines point in different directions during the sun’s 11-year cycle of activity.

 

Conventional thinking had suggested that north-pointing field lines would act like reinforcements to Earth’s northward field, causing the planet to “raise shields" against solar winds.

The idea is based, in part, on the fact that auroras are brighter and space-weather hazards increase when solar winds carry southward-pointing field lines, Sibeck said.

“So it’s reasonable to think that during periods when the sun’s magnetic field lines point south, that’s when the most particles get into Earth’s magnetosphere."

THEMIS, however, showed that the opposite is true.

The satellite system “found the solar particle layer is much thicker when the two fields are pointing in the same direction," said Marit Øieroset, a THEMIS scientist based at the University of California, Berkeley, who first saw the effect.

In fact, 20 times more particles get through Earth’s magnetic shield when the field lines are aligned than when they are opposed, she said.

Model Behavior

To find the mechanism behind this discovery, Oieroset and Sibeck turned to computer models that could simulate the conditions observed by THEMIS.

The models showed that the likely driver is north-facing field lines connecting with Earth’s magnetosphere, said Jimmy Raeder, a physicist at the University of New Hampshire in Durham who helped build the simulations.

As a field line approaches, it latches onto the poles and wraps around the planet like an octopus using a tentacle to snare its prey, he said. 

The latching, known as magnetic reconnection, tears huge cracks in the magnetosphere and allows solar plasma to leak in.

“We have other observations from other satellites that this reconnection process happens over the poles at times, but we had never appreciated what it actually does," Raeder said.

A thicker layer of solar particles, however, isn’t enough by itself to create geomagnetic troubles for Earth.

Right now the planet is enjoying a period of low activity called solar minimum. But particles have been building up inside the magnetosphere as the solar wind carries northward-facing field lines to Earth.

During the next solar cycle, the winds are expected to carry southward-facing field lines, which connect with the magnetosphere in such a way that they provide extra charge to any plasma inside the shield.

“You can sort of compare [the situation] to a gas stove," Raeder said.

“If you turn on the gas and you light it right away, nothing will happen—the gas stove will go on and there will be a flame.

“But if you turn on a gas stove and you don’t do anything for a while and then you throw in a match, what will happen? It will say, Boom!"

Giant Breach in Earth’s Magnetic Field Discovered

Dec. 16, 2008: NASA’s five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth’s magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. Solar wind can flow in through the opening to “load up" the magnetosphere for powerful geomagnetic storms. But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are even more amazed at the strange and unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics.

“At first I didn’t believe it," says THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. “This finding fundamentally alters our understanding of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction."

The magnetosphere is a bubble of magnetism that surrounds Earth and protects us from solar wind. Exploring the bubble is a key goal of the THEMIS mission, launched in February 2007. The big discovery came on June 3, 2007, when the five probes serendipitously flew through the breach just as it was opening. Onboard sensors recorded a torrent of solar wind particles streaming into the magnetosphere, signaling an event of unexpected size and importance.

“The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself," says Wenhui Li, a space physicist at the University of New Hampshire who has been analyzing the data. Li’s colleague Jimmy Raeder, also of New Hampshire, says “1027 particles per second were flowing into the magnetosphere—that’s a 1 followed by 27 zeros. This kind of influx is an order of magnitude greater than what we thought was possible."

The event began with little warning when a gentle gust of solar wind delivered a bundle of magnetic fields from the Sun to Earth. Like an octopus wrapping its tentacles around a big clam, solar magnetic fields draped themselves around the magnetosphere and cracked it open. The cracking was accomplished by means of a process called “magnetic reconnection." High above Earth’s poles, solar and terrestrial magnetic fields linked up (reconnected) to form conduits for solar wind. Conduits over the Arctic and Antarctic quickly expanded; within minutes they overlapped over Earth’s equator to create the biggest magnetic breach ever recorded by Earth-orbiting spacecraft.

The size of the breach took researchers by surprise. “We’ve seen things like this before," says Raeder, “but never on such a large scale. The entire day-side of the magnetosphere was open to the solar wind."

The circumstances were even more surprising. Space physicists have long believed that holes in Earth’s magnetosphere open only in response to solar magnetic fields that point south. The great breach of June 2007, however, opened in response to a solar magnetic field that pointed north.

“To the lay person, this may sound like a quibble, but to a space physicist, it is almost seismic," says Sibeck. “When I tell my colleagues, most react with skepticism, as if I’m trying to convince them that the sun rises in the west."

Here is why they can’t believe their ears: The solar wind presses against Earth’s magnetosphere almost directly above the equator where our planet’s magnetic field points north. Suppose a bundle of solar magnetism comes along, and it points north, too. The two fields should reinforce one another, strengthening Earth’s magnetic defenses and slamming the door shut on the solar wind. In the language of space physics, a north-pointing solar magnetic field is called a “northern IMF" and it is synonymous with shields up! 

“So, you can imagine our surprise when a northern IMF came along and shields went down instead," says Sibeck. “This completely overturns our understanding of things."

Northern IMF events don’t actually trigger geomagnetic storms, notes Raeder, but they do set the stage for storms by loading the magnetosphere with plasma. A loaded magnetosphere is primed for auroras, power outages, and other disturbances that can result when, say, a CME (coronal mass ejection) hits.

The years ahead could be especially lively. Raeder explains: “We’re entering Solar Cycle 24. For reasons not fully understood, CMEs in even-numbered solar cycles (like 24) tend to hit Earth with a leading edge that is magnetized north. Such a CME should open a breach and load the magnetosphere with plasma just before the storm gets underway. It’s the perfect sequence for a really big event."

Sibeck agrees. “This could result in stronger geomagnetic storms than we have seen in many years."

Syrian War: Egyptian Officers Arrive in Syria, Retreat and Infighting of Al Qaeda Rebels

 

Over 2,500 militants have been killed and wounded in western Aleppo since the start of Al-Nusra-led attempt to break the government forces’ defenses in the area on October 28, according to sources in the Syrian military. Considering that the total striking force deployed by Jaish al-Fatah coalition for the operation was about 5,000 fighters, it’s clear why the militant coalition failed to achieve its military goals.

An infighting allegedly started between Harakat Nour al-Din al-Zenki  and Fastaqim Kama Umirt militant groupsin Salaheddine and Al-Ansari Mashhad areas in Aleppo city on November 2.  Nour al-Din al-Zenki   stormed Fastaqim Kama Umirt checkpoints and arrested dozens of Fastaqim Kama fighters including their commander ‘Istakem kma Oumrt’. At least 1 militant was reported dead and 25 injured as result of the clashes.

The conflict among ‘moderate rebels’ reportedly appeared because Fastaqim Kama Umirt was considering a possibility to leave Aleppo through corridors set up by the Syrian and Russian military.

The Russian general staff has announced that President Vladimir Putin had ordered a humanitarian pause in Aleppo from 9am to 7pm on November 4.

“Considering that our American colleagues were unable to separate the opposition from terrorists, we are addressing all militant leaders directly, urging them to cease hostilities and leave Aleppo with their arms,” General Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the Russian General Staff said, adding that “Two corridors will be opened, from which Syrian troops and weapons would be pulled back.” Six additional corridors will be opened for civilians.

A group of Egyptian officers allegedly arrived in Syria on November 1 in order to learn from Russian military advisers that are embedded with government troops at the battle against terrorists across the country. The development took place amid the ongoing expansion of military cooperation between Russia and Egypt. In October 2016, Russian airborne troops arrived Egypt to participate in a joint military drill with the host country. The drill was codenamed “Defenders of Friendship 2016”.

Crack in earth’s magnetic shield has been spotted by the largest and most advanced cosmic ray monitor, located in India. The cosmic ray monitor talked above is the GRAPES-3 muon telescope. It is available at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research’s Cosmic Ray laboratory in Ooty, Tamilnadu.

According to the scientists, the explosion happened as a huge cloud of plasma evicted from the solar corona hit the earth surface at a great speed (of about 2.5 million kilometers per hour). This resulted into immense compression of earth’s magnetosphere from 11 to 4 times the radius of the earth. The explosion also caused a harsh geomagnetic storm. The GRAPES-3 muon identified a massive galactic cosmic ray explosion of about 20 GeV last year, for about a couple of hours.

The geomagnetic triggered by the explosion caused aurora borealis and radio signal blackouts in many nations at high latitudes. This claim has been made through a study published in the journal Physical Review Letters this week.  Well, life still exists on earth as the magnetosphere of the earth extended across a radius of millions kilometer, that appeared as the first protective line. Otherwise, it could have caused destruction through rigorous and extremely powerful radiation of solar and galactic cosmic ray flow. Solar storms can result into extreme destruction to life on earth by paralyzing massive electrical power grids, important GPS systems, satellite functionalities and other communication means.

Numerical simulations done by the GRAPES-3 researchers reveal that earth’s magnetic shield cracked a bit as a result of magnetic reconnection, which led the lower energy galactic cosmic ray particles enter within earth’s atmosphere. Scientists also claimed that the earth’s magnetic filed twisted these cosmic rays. They claim that the particles turned linearly from the day half of the earth to the night half, where it was spotted as an explosion by the GRAPES-3 muon telescope in midnight on 22 June 2015.

This analytical output was revealed post-rigorous simulations over many weeks through the 1280-core computing farm that was developed by the native physicists and engineers of the GRAPES-3 team at the Cosmic Ray Laboratory in Ooty.

Crack In Earth’s Magnetic Shield Greater Than Expected

Analysis of a cosmic event from Jun. 2015 revealed Earth’s magnetic shield cracked, allowing cosmic rays to leak into the atmosphere and causing geomagnetic storms in the Northern Hemisphere.

The GRAPES-3 muon telescope in Ooty, India, detected a spike in cosmic ray levels in Jun. 2015, but the severity of the event wasn’t revealed until Nov. 2016 through a study published in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters.

The study reports for two hours on Jun. 22, 2015, particles from a giant cloud of fast-moving plasma penetrated the Earth’s atmosphere at approximately 1.6 million mph. The particles, originating from the surface of the sun, caused the Earth’s magnetosphere to shrink from 11 times to 4 times the earth’s radius — allowing harmful solar winds to breach the Earth’s surface.

Earth’s magnetosphere acts as the first line of defense between the Earth and the flow of galactic cosmic rays, which shield life on the planet from harmful ultraviolet radiation. It has a radius of over 620,000 miles, according to Wired.

Numerical simulations of the event performed by the GRAPES-3 collaboration propose that the Earth’s magnetic shield cracked due to magnetic reconnection, allowing low-energy galactic cosmic ray particles to enter the atmosphere.

“This vulnerability can occur when magnetized plasma from the Sun deforms Earth’s magnetic field, stretching its shape at the poles and diminishing its ability to deflect charged particles," Katherine Wright explains on the American Physical Society’s website.

The solar wind triggered a severe geomagnetic storm at the time of the event, generating vivid aurora borealis — also known as “northern lights" — and radio signal blackouts in many high-altitude countries.

The study reports the surge in cosmic activity indicates “transient weakening of Earth’s magnetic shield.”

The study authors remain optimistic for Earth geomagnetic future, saying the research may “hold clues for a better understanding of future superstorms that could cripple modern technological infrastructure on Earth.”
