MOSCOW, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) — Damascus is ready to resume a ceasefire and participate in intra-Syria talks for a political settlement of the protracted crisis, but it needs parties involved to guarantee the safe evacuation of civilians from the besieged city of Aleppo, visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said here on Friday.

MOSCOW, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) — The Syrian government is ready to resume truce on the condition of guarantees for the evacuation of civilians from the besieged city of Aleppo, said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in Moscow on Friday.
“We are ready to resume this cease-fire, but only under the condition that we get guarantees that civilians would be able to use that cease-fire," Muallem said at a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.
He added that Damascus is willing to immediately return to intra-Syria talks “without external interference," obviously in reference to the United States.
Together with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the three ministers are expected to hold a trilateral meeting in Moscow later in the day.
Iran calls for truce and political solution to Syria crisis
TEHRAN, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) — Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Friday called for reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis besides fighting the extremists in the country, official IRNA news agency reported.
“Unfortunately, some countries have sought military solutions to Syria crisis, while the way to settle this problem is political approaches as well as fighting the Takfiri groups," Zarif said upon arrival at Moscow airport for trilateral talks.
“We have always insisted on comprehensive ceasefire, availability of humanitarian aid (to the besieged people) and finding political solutions to the Syrian issue," he was quoted as saying.
Moscow talks will address cooperation for peaceful means as well as confrontation with the Takfiri groups, he added.
Iran associates Takfiri extremism in the Syrian conflicts with the followers of some Sunni Muslim ideology in Saudi Arabia and urges fight against them.
Zarif is scheduled to attend a trilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on regional developments, including the conflict in Syria.
Zarif will also hold a separate meeting with Lavrov to discuss Tehran-Moscow relations.
Iran has urged Russia to strengthen strategic cooperation on regional and international issues, especially the ongoing crisis in Syria.

Russia, Syria, Iran vow to defend intra-Syria talks for political settlement

MOSCOW, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) — Top diplomats of Russia, Syria and Iran on Friday vowed to defend the revival of intra-Syria talks in order to facilitate a political solution to the protracted crisis in the war-torn Middle East country.
“We agreed to return to the cessation of hostilities regime and defend the urgent start of intra-Syria talks, while solving issues of improving the humanitarian situation there," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a joint briefing after a trilateral meeting with his Syrian and Iranian counterparts in Moscow.
All the three parties reaffirmed that there is no alternative to the settlement of the Syria crisis by political and diplomatic means.
“We believe that the Syria settlement is only possible with the help of a dialogue between different Syrian groups," said Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. “There is no military solution to it."
Russia and Iran confirmed their support for sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, as well as their readiness to jointly fight terrorists and restore peace in the country, Lavrov told reporters.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said earlier on Friday that the Syrian government is ready to resume truce and immediately return to intra-Syria talks “without external interference," obviously in reference to the United States.
In a sign of support for the statement, Lavrov said Russia and Iran agreed to stand behind the intention of the Syrian authorities by sending as soon as possible a government delegation to Geneva, Switzerland, for negotiations with representatives of all opposition groups under the aegis of the United Nations.
The situation in the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo has increasingly deteriorated following the collapse of the ceasefire agreement Russia and the United States brokered, with each side accusing the other of violating the hard-earned truce deal in September.
Earlier this month, the United States unilaterally suspended talks with Russia over truce-mending efforts, which provoked a renewed round of diplomatic spat between the two powers.
Moscow has blamed Washington for breaking its promise of separating the so-called “moderate" opposition from terrorist groups in Syria, which it believes led to the failure of their deal.
On Oct. 18, Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, together with the foreign ministers of some regional powers, met in the Swiss city of Lausanne for discussions of restarting the political process in Syria.
The talks ended with no major breakthrough in settling the five-year-long crisis, but only participants’ promises to continue contacts.

Kerry, Lavrov Stress Importance of Continuing Syria Talks in Geneva MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The call was initiated by the US side, according to the ministry’s statement. “The heads of foreign ministries continued their discussion on ways to settle the Syrian conflict, including normalization of the situation around Aleppo, taking into account the approaches in line with the previous Russian-US agreements. This will require from the United States to finally separate moderate opposition from terrorist groups," the foreign ministry said.
“Lavrov and Kerry also discussed how to contribute to the settlement of crises in Yemen, Libya, as well as separate issues on the bilateral agenda," it added. The call took place hours after Lavrov met with foreign ministers of Iran and Syria in Moscow.
