Kansas Sinkhole Expands: Residents Call Giant, Overnight Chasm In Wallace County ‘A God Thing’

on August 05 2013 12:25 PM

A massive sinkhole that opened up overnight in Wallace County, Kan., last week, is continuing to expand, confounding residents who call its sudden appearance inexplicable and miraculous. Officials say they have been unable to determine what caused the sinkhole, which currently measures 200 feet wide and 90 feet deep, but they believe it was an act of God.

According to KWCH 12, the hole opened up several nights ago in Wallace County, a rural area in western Kansas about 10 miles north of Sharon Springs. Resident Dalton Hoss told the news station that he awoke the next morning and received a phone call from his brother, telling him that a sinkhole had swallowed up a large portion of his pasture.

“My brother found it,” Hoss said. “He called me up and his voice was quaking and he said, ‘You’ll never believe what I just saw.’”

The natural phenomenon has caused a stir throughout the town of roughly 1,500, drawing daily visitors who stop by the pit to ogle and take photographs. Some intrepid tourists have even climbed down into the bottom to get a better look.

“I’d seen pictures and I knew it was deep, but I didn’t think it was this deep,” Gavin Mote, a graduate of Wallace County High, said. “You get out here and you get a whole different perspective on how deep it is.”

Although it has steadily become a local tourist attraction, officials warn that the sinkhole likely hasn’t finished expanding. Deep cracks have appeared around the periphery, prompting concern that it may swallow nearby buildings.

Sinkholes can occur naturally or as a result of pollution, as in the recent case of a 15-acre-wide sinkhole that appeared in southern Louisiana, likely due to a collapsed salt dome. They are most prevalent in areas with karst terrain, a term geologists use for land with underlying soluble rocks or groundwater, like Florida. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, about 20 percent of the United States’ topography is predisposed to sinkholes.

But while residents and officials continue to investigate the hole’s source, some in town are convinced that it defies all logical explanation.

“Man had nothing to do with this,” Wallace County Sheriff Larry Townsend said. “This is a God thing. There’s no oil well around here, there are no irrigation wells anywhere near. This is something that just happened.”

Far from Wallace County on Monday, another sinkhole appeared: CTV reported that a sinkhole had opened up on a busy street in downtown Montreal, swallowing a bulldozer with a person inside.

Kansas sinkhole in Wallace County continues to grow

A Kansas sinkhole engulfed an entire pasture and still continues to grow. The Wallace County formation is 90 feet deep and 200 feet across. According to The Inquisitr on August 3, 2013, the sheriff is warning residents to stay away.

“Officials are still waiting on experts to come out and examine the Kansas sinkhole. They’re not sure what has caused it since there’s no nearby irrigation wells or oil drilling happening anywhere in the region."

The Kansas sinkhole is cracking around the edges, which may indicate that it will grow further. Local residents keep coming to take a look. The owner of the property is trying to keep curiosity seekers away and has enlisted the help of the sheriff. Apparently it is hard to really appreciate the size of the hole without viewing it firsthand.

Depressions like the Kansas sinkhole are sometimes caused by sandstone dissolution or even old mine collapses. Sinkholes have been found up to 2,000 feet in diameter. They may form all at once or gradually over time. The Kansa sinkhole seemed to be the former, but now it may be growing. One of the largest in the U.S. is the Bayou Corne sinkhole, which covers 15 acres and was formed by the collapse of an old salt dome.

A gigantic sinkhole appeared in Wallace County, located in western Kansas this week, according to reports on Friday.

The sinkhole, discovered some eight miles north of the town of Sharon Springs, is 200 feet across and 90 feet deep, according to KWCH-TV.

A local police officer said the sinkhole appears to be getting bigger. “Man had nothing to do with this. This is a God thing. There’s no oil well around here, there are no irrigation wells anywhere near. This is something that just happened,” Sheriff Townsend told the station.

Another local, Virgil Fisher, asked: “How can this happen? What happened to what was below?”

The sinkhole opened in a pasture belonging to local man Dalton Hoss.

“Actually, my brother found it. He called me up and his voice was quaking and he said, ‘You’ll never believe what I just saw,’” Hoss said.

Across the United States, there are reports of sinkholes nearly every day.

Last month, a sinkhole in Toledo, Ohio swallowed up a woman’s car as she was driving. The woman was able to escape the hole mostly unscathed.

Earlier in the year, a sinkhole opened up underneath a man’s home near Tampa, Fla., killing him while he was sleeping.

And a sinkhole also swallowed a man’s pond in Central California in March.

Residents of Sharon Springs, Kansas were shocked to wake up one morning to find a pasture had been swallowed by a sinkhole. The hole appeared suddenly during the week and now measures 200 feet across at 90 feet deep — and growing. Residents reported seeing cracks in their land a few days prior to the hole caving in, the Daily Mail reported.

Sheriff Larry Townsend said the monster-sized hole also has cracks around its edges, indicating that it will get bigger in the coming days. The area has been declared dangerous, but the mystery hole has drawn loads of visitors since it first appeared, the Examiner reported. Dalton Hoss, one resident who noticed cracks on his land prior to the development of the hole, has tried to curtain visitors and coax them away for their safety.

It is unclear what caused the hole, but officials believe it wasn’t due to manmade structures. The area currently lacks any big infrastructure that could have created the conditions for the hole formation. No injuries have been reported.

“Man had nothing to do with this. This is a God thing," the sheriff stated. “There’s no oil well around here, there are no irrigation wells anywhere near. This is something that just happened."

This isn’t the first instance of a large sinkhole suddenly appearing in recent months. A woman’s car was swallowed by a sinkhole as she was driving in Toledo, Ohio last month. She managed to escape the large chasm. A New Jersey man wasn’t so lucky as he was killed by a sinkhole opened beneath him at a warehouse where he worked in May.
